The veteran topnotch director B Vijaya Reddy who directed nearly 48 Kannada films and produced a few with another veteran director V Somashekhar died on Friday at Appolo Hospital in Chennai for age old complications. He was 84.
Vijaya Reddy on a wheel chair with high respect to Dr Rajakumar family came to receive Dr Rajakumar Souharda Award in 2018. The event was held at Dr Rajakumar Memorial. Power star Puneeth Rajakumar assisted the veteran hold the mike when he was speaking on that day.
Perhaps the most successful films of B Vijaya Reddy were made in Kannada. 7 of his 48 films starred Dr Rajakumar – Mayoora, Sanadi Appanna, Gandhada Gudi, Badavara Bandhu, Naa Ninna Mareyalaare, Huliya Halina Mevu, Bhakha Prahallada…..were super hit films. The film ‘Naa Ninna Bidalaare’ was another super hit starring Anant Nag and Lakshmi.
Yet the dream of this director to direct Dr Rajakumar in a double role in ‘Bhaktha Ambarisha’ did not materialize. It was on June 22, 2000, the song recording muhurut for this film was held at Akash Audio.
Dr Rajakumar, Parvathamma Rajakumar, Varadappa, Vijaya Reddy, Hamsalekha, Raghavendra Rajakumar were present at the script pooja. Nada Brahma Hamsalekha was getting ready for eight songs and two Kanda Padyas.
Smt Parvathamma Rajakumar in consultation with B Vijaya Reddy planned shooting at Kedaranath (one of the Chardhams in North), Chickmagalur and after ‘Mayoora’ shooting the permission was obtained to shoot at Mysuru Palace. For the costumes selection and other works Smt Parvathamma Rajakumar spent around Rs.30 lakhs in 2000.
The destiny had something else in store. Dr Raj was abducted by fugitive Veerappan on July 30, 2000. It was after 108 days the pillar of Kannada cinema Dr Raj was released. He picked acute knee problems in this tough stay in the dense forest. That had eventually snatched his projects in cinema. Dr Raj passed away on April 12, 2006.
Parvathamma Rajakumar wanted to make ‘Bhaktha Ambarisha’ with B VIjaya Reddy with Shiv, Puneeth and Raghavendra Rajakumar. This dream also did not get fulfilled.
Dr Rajakumar with Lokesh staged this play ‘Bhaktha Ambarisha’ in Ravindra Kalakshetra long ago. Then it was Srinivasamurthy veteran actor who popularized this mythological subject on stage. Srinivasamurthy staged the ‘Bhaktha Ambarisha’ play at Udupi and that was a huge hit.
Is there anyone to take up this huge project today?
