REMEMBERING BEDARA KANNAPPA

It is one of the early fifty films of director HLN Simha that invited Muthuraj and made him as Rajakumar from this film. That is none other than Bedara Kannappa. The film was released on 7th of May 1954. The star of Stars was born on that day.

It was Rs.750 payment that Dr Rajakumar acted in this epoch making film and it was released 66 years ago. The hunter giving his eyes to Lord Shiva is the crux of this film.

The legend on stage and cinema Gubbi Veeranna was one of the producers of this film. Pandari Bai was heroine of this film. Dr Rajakumar in the role of Dinna alias Kannappa got the meaning of coming right and left before the camera while shooting from another famous actress Pandari Bai. Raja Sulochana and unforgettable comedian of Kannada cinema Narasimharaju also got birth from this film.

Ratan, Kushala Kumari, FV Iyer, Kumar, HR Ramachandra Shastry as Lord Shiva, Yellamma Devi as Parvathi, Rushyendramani, AV Subba Rao, MR Dasappa, Mani Iyer, MR Nanjappa, Narayana, SR Raju and others were part of the cast.

R Sudarshanam composed 13 songs for this film and the most famous even to this day is ‘Shivappa Kayo Thande….sung by Shirkaali Govindarajan.

The film was produced by AV Meiyappan (who later sold the house to Dr Rajakumar in Sadashivanagara), Gubbi Veeranna and CR Basavaraj invested on this film. The film was in Telugu, Tamil, Hindi and Malayalam languages.

The film script was written by GV Iyer, Maruthi Rao was cameraman and the banner was AVM Productions and Karnataka Films. It was 165 minutes film.
